Joan Maragall (Barcelona 1860-1911) was the most active intellectual of Catalan culture between the 19th and 20th centuries. In the spring of 1901 the poet spent long amounts of time in Caldes with his family, as he had to undergo spa treatment to alleviate his ailments. Following several stays at Hotel Providencia on Calle del Carmen No. 4 (now Carrer d’El Callao) at the foot of the train station and next to Capella del Carmen, they established themselves in a house on Carrer Ciutat de La Paz.
Caldetes soon had an impact on Maragall. Part of his work from that time is full of references to the town. Of these, the five poems Vistes al mar (Views of The Sea), written during his stay in 1901, are particularly worth noting.
In 1908 he began to write Nausica, which he took to the theatre two years later. This work, inspired by an episode in the Odyssey, was performed in the Can Marcel·lí Coll gardens in Caldetes in 1960, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its publication.
In 1911 he published Seqüències (Sequencies), a collection of poems that also included El Pi d’Estrac (The Pine of Estrac), a poem inspired by the place where Maragall used to converse with his friend Salvador Albert.
